Wait, people actually thought metamagic rods wouldn't work this way? That was pretty much spelled out in the rules as such. I myself will probably go by the first option, but I can see an argument for either way, and it is just odd that metamagic rods were a part of the original question, and left out of the faq (presumably) on purpose. Magical Lineage (mgc) / Wayang Spellhunter (rgn) - Pick one spell and cast. 1, that metamagic rods are included in this ruling, under the "in general" clause, or 2, they are left out of a general ruling because they specifically say "spells of 3rd level or lower" (lesser rods) At level 11, the cost is halved, and you can cast any spell in your book in. Your ability to alter your spell of choice is greater than expected. Heighten Spell is really the only metamagic feat that makes using a higher-level spell slot an advantage instead of a disadvantage. The advantages of the metamagic feat are spelled out in the Benefits section of the feat, and the increased spell slot level is a disadvantage. 25gp for 1d6 damage is a bad trade by itself. The best way to use this is to trigger the Fell X metamagic feats, which only trigger if the spell deals damage. Scrolls of Magic Missile are a considerably better investment, which is very sad. In general, use the (normal, lower) spell level or the (higher) spell slot level, whichever is more of a disadvantage for the caster. Black Lore of Moil CAr (+0): The damage is poor, and this can get expensive very quickly. Obtainable by VMC, but probably not worth it by that method because of the intense feat sacrifice to get there.
